The White Rose movement

There comes a time when people have to take action against evil in the world. When doing nothing is no longer acceptable. When 'just minding my own business' is not enough. Germany's citizens did not oppose Hitler until much too late, so that those who did paid the ultimate price for so doing. Christians in Australia in the early 21st century need to begin to oppose the totalitarian evil that is arising in our society. Now is the time, while we can still act. We dare not wait until it is too late.

Today marks the anniversary of the execution of Hans and Sopie Scholl, the German brother and sister who founded the peaceful anti-Nazi resistance group 'The White Rose.'

They were beheaded on this day (February 22 in Germany) in 1943 along with fellow White Rose member Christoph Probst, a young father whose wife had just given birth to their third child (whom he never met before execution), for peacefully handing out pamphlets at the University of Munich just five days earlier.

The White Rose was founded by Hans and Sophie after they read the transcript of a sermon decrying the practice of euthanasia in Germany by outspoken Catholic Bishop, and critic of the Nazi regime, August von Galen (the 'Lion of Munster').

The White Rose Movement. Christian resistance to the Nazis in WW2

The White Rose was a beautiful example of virtuous resistance against overwhelming evil which encompassed both academic thought and activism, Protestants and Catholics, and the young and the old.

Sophie was 21, Christoph was 23, and Hans was 24 on the day they were executed. Just moments before they were led away to the guillotine Christoph Probst turned to Hans and Sophie and said “I didn’t know that dying can be so easy, in a few minutes we will meet in eternity.”

"The real damage is done by those millions who want to 'survive.' The honest men who just want to be left in peace. Those who don’t want their little lives disturbed by anything bigger than themselves. Those with no sides and no causes."
-Sophie Scholl-

"No one can know what secret inner ripening can come from suffering and sorrow. All we know is that every individual’s life is priceless - that each is dear to God."
-Christoph Probst-

"It's high time that Christians made up their minds to do something . . . What are we going to show in the way of resistance... when all this terror is over? We will be standing empty-handed. We will have no answer when we are asked: What did you do about it?"
-Hans Scholl-

"I will cling to the rope God has thrown me in Jesus Christ, even when my numb hands can no longer feel it.”
-Sophie Scholl-

The German film: 'Sophie Scholl, the Final Days' is also well worth the watch!
